You can have a high-volume, high-impact, large team, that's also wildly profitable

Recently, I was having a conversation with a chiro student who stated, "I was told that most high-volume practices aren't very profitable because it takes such a big team to run them and they usually don't charge as much as other practice models."

***My response + rebuttal (aka actual experience instead of theory), "Well, how could they afford such a large + impactful team if they weren't wildly profitable and charged the exact right amount with their fees?"

I don't speak to profit or money much at all in this group, but I'm feeling a bit compelled to do so more and more here lately as the chiropractic profession seems to have a tougher time with true business metrics, math , and money... because we get just poor advice from those who purport to be business + financial experts, but just maybe aren't there yet themselves. So in turn, the confusion and subluxated realities get passed down and spread around.

Students and Startups are my absolute FAVORITE!!!

 

Nothing fires me up more than connecting with them.Knowing that I can help to instill confidence and share tried and true TRUTHS with them right out of the gates so they never have to “start over” makes my heart sing with JOY!!!

Here are my top 7 pieces of advice for students and startups….

1. You don’t have to start small. Plan to succeed and work that plan.
2. You can be all cash. Cash-based care is the MOST patient-centric care because no extra “cooks in the kitchen” are disrupting the doctor/patient relationship.
3. You can be wildly successful right away.
4. You can see “only kids and families” while still absolutely crushing practice.
5. You don’t have to offer anything else besides chiropractic. Chiropractic is MORE THAN ENOUGH to achieve mind-blowing outcomes and profitability!
6. Team is a necessary INVESTMENT, not a luxury or negotiable expense!

One ☝️ of the biggest mistakes I made early in practice was -- giving up on dads 👨🏻.

Compared to getting moms + kids under real neurologically-based chiropractic + wellness care, dads are freaking tough.

They think different, operate different, and just flat out are vastly different. And as a result, they can be tougher to connect with + convert into care if you don't take the right approach.

Unfortunately, most of my early mentors in my Pediatric Cert + Training programs had spent their entire careers making the same mistake we would for the first phase of PWC, and they just gave up on dads.
They made excuses (their "too skeptical" or "too medical") and said they'd never get it.

And the worst + weakest of these early mentors and colleagues I was exposed to would even call then names and make fun of them.

Then about 7 years ago we were about to launch a Father's Day internal referral special and our team got together and collectively got our head out of you know what!

Looking back on the last 7.5 years I can think of many times that a family called to get information but didn’t book right away. Or called and booked but then had a change of heart only to call back again months later to make an appointment. I can even think of many families who came in a couple of times for a Day 1 & 2 but did not start care.

But eventually, they come back and stay for good. They do it when they are ready. When the struggle has gotten to be too much. When they can no longer tolerate more of the same each day. When OUR VOICE is the loudest voice in the room. When they dare to dream in a way that they have not done in a really long time, if ever.

That there is Hope..
That there are Answers…

That WE CAN HELP!

It’s natural to feel disappointed when a family doesn’t start care but at the same time it’s the best damn fuel there is to be obsessed with delivering the highest level of clinical care possible.

You Don't Build a Business. You Build People and Then Build the Business

There are two important questions‍ to ask ourselves whenever we are evaluating our systems and procedures.

Am I setting myself up for growth with this system etc?
Am I building my systems with longevity in mind?

Why are these questions important? Because there are few absolutely NOT answers to those questions that must be avoided at all costs if the growth of your practice and impact are your goals.

1. Running as a solo doc/no CA office
2. Manually running/posting payments….no auto-debits, EHR/payment system integration
3. Using paper systems like travel cards, patient document hard copies instead of digital, etc
4. Manually maintaining ledgers/charges/care plans
5. Docs performing scans and presenting your own financials

The great news is that the answer to fix these things is insanely simple: automation and people.
